Superior’s Edge

Things are rarely as they appear. Here on the edge of Lake Superior, even the edges aren’t obvious. The dunes of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore sometimes sit atop high cliffs, like this one.

Hiking a Snail’s Pace

On a guided hike out of Montreat, NC I happened across this snail, a flicker of movement among the mosses draped over fallen logs on Big Butt Mountain.

Pine Grove Reflections

Pine Grove Furnace State Park south of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania is notable for being the mid-point of the Appalachian Trail. In the heart of winter, it gets icy.

Gateway to Gathland

View from Cheaha

Cheaha State Park Alabama afford views unparalleled for the region. This state park is truly vertical, showing off a spur of rock rising well above the valleys below. The Pinhoti Trail follows its top.

Beneath the Withlacoochee

Way down under the Withlacoochee State Forest, there’s a whole other world waiting to be seen. The forest is rich with caves, and there are groups that lead explorations into them.

The Maroon Bells

A day hike at White River National Forest near Aspen led me to this beauty spot, the Maroon Bells the focal point of the hike up the valley.
