Things are rarely as they appear. Here on the edge of Lake Superior, even the edges aren’t obvious. I first came to Grand Marais, in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, during a Lake Huron Circle Tour by car that seems a lifetime ago. A hike to the dunes was a must after this remote UP village stole my heart. Natural perfection happened – sky, water, sand, grass, and the light of late afternoon. At the edge of the landscape, the land ends, too … it’s about a 60 foot sheer drop down to a pebbled beach at the base of the giant dunes. Not a hike where you want to rush to the edge!
